    Description

Mays steals the spotlight from Mantle and Maris in 1961...

1961 Willie Mays All-Star Game Used Bat, PSA/DNA GU 8.5. There were two editions of the Midsummer Classic during this season immortalized by the M&M Boys' home run race--at Mays' Candlestick Park home stadium and twenty days later at Fenway--and the legendary outfielder started in both. So while we cannot be certain which contest featured the provided Adirondack M63 lumber (possibly both), we can proudly report expert John Taube's characterization of game use as "excellent," with multiple ball marks, stitch impressions, cleat marks and light pine tar on the cracked and professionally repaired handle.

Mays was a central figure in each of the 1961 All-Star Games, scoring the winning run in the Candlestick affair, and batting .333 at Fenway before heavy rains brought the contest to an end as the first tie game in the history of the exhibition.

At thirty-five inches (35") in length and just over thirty-one ounces (31.3 oz.) in weight, the bat perfectly matches the specifications of lumber favored by the 1960's greatest baseball star, and it's somewhere between possible and probable that Mays carried over use of the truncheon during a regular season that saw Mays go deep forty times, lead the National League in runs scored and finish sixth in MVP balloting. LOA from PSA/DNA, GU 8.5.
