1961-63 Yogi Berra Rare "Spline" Bat Used by New York Yankees Team. Bizarre Hillerich & Bradsby rarity was an experiment that never got too far, but now resurfaces half a century later to tempt the modern collector looking for something cool and unique. This Yogi Berra signature model R43 features an inlay of hickory in the back barrel of the otherwise ash-constructed club, an effort to minimize the effects of grain checking that remains common in game used wooden bats. The "spline" bats were distributed to the various teams during spring training, and while most use likely derives from Grapefruit League action, there is some documentation of spline bat use during the regular season. The "team index" status of this bat makes attribution to any particular player impossible, but the appeal here is the intense rarity of the design. Length is thirty-five inches, weight thirty and a half ounces. Heavy use. LOA from PSA/DNA, Authentic.
