    The Mick's record-setter?

1960 Mickey Mantle Game Used Bat, PSA/DNA GU 8 & MEARS A10. The most famous home run of the 1960 was a heartbreaker for Mickey and his pinstriped pals--Bill Mazeroski's World Series walk-off--but a month earlier it had been the iconic Yankee slugger whose long ball artistry had the baseball world buzzing. In the top of the seventh inning of a September 10, 1960 visit to Detroit, Mantle obliterated a two-out, two-on delivery from Tigers right-hander Paul Foytack, clearing the right field roof of Briggs Stadium and its Trumbull Avenue border. The scorched sphere finally fell to Earth at the base of a shed in the Brooks Lumberyard, in view of a Brooks employee named Paul Borders.

While greater home run distances have been estimated through mathematical equations, that 1960 Mantle blast stands as the longest Major League home run ever measured from home plate to its ultimate point of impact: 643 feet. It remains the standing record in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Could this have been the bat that made baseball history? It's impossible to know. But the outstanding game use, visible in the form of ball marks and deep stitch impressions, speaks to the Mick's preternatural power. Cleat divots and red and black scuffing that resembles rack marks are likewise found on the punished surface, but the handle remains surprisingly uncracked.

The Adirondack 113A measures thirty-five and a half inches (35.5") in length and weighs thirty-two ounces (32 oz.), correct for Mantle, and its particular combination of center and barrel branding assures the vintage reported in our lot title. We note that a notarized letter of provenance from the first post-Mantle owner misremembers the year as 1958, reporting that Mantle had donated it for a charity raffle. A period blue ink inscription on the lower barrel, "Best Wishes, Mickey Mantle," is faded but legible. LOA from PSA/DNA, GU 8. LOA from MEARS, A10. Full LOA from PSA/DNA (autograph). Full LOA from James Spence Authentication. Letter of provenance from original owner.
