    Description

1960 Ernie Banks Period-Signed Game Used Bat, PSA/DNA GU 8. By the time the young Ernie Banks had made his way to the Majors, debuting with the 1953 Chicago Cubs, Banks' affection for our national pastime was profound, and he'd quickly earn the nickname "Mr. Cub" for his infectious "Let's play two!" exuberance. Despite ownership of the career record for most games played without a postseason appearance (2,538), Banks never regretted his allegiance to the hapless Cubs and remains arguably the most beloved figure ever to call Wrigley home.

Banks won back-to-back N.L. MVP awards in 1958-59. The following season, 1960, his forty-one home runs paced all Senior Circuit sluggers, while frightening more opposing pitchers into intentional walks (twenty-eight) than any other Major League batter, single-handedly upending conventional wisdom regarding the power capabilities of middle infielders. He also added 117 RBI, placed fourth in the MVP balloting, and secured his only Gold Glove Award.

Leading bat expert John Taube has dated this signature model Hillerich & Bradsby S2 to the 1960 season and characterized its game use as "excellent." Most Banks lumber traded in the hobby today dates from the second half of his Hall of Fame career, and while any bat blessed by his touch carries enormous collecting appeal, this early model is a particularly significant representation.

The bat measures 35" in length, weighs 31 ounces, is uncracked, with Bank's "14" on the knob in faded felt tip. Vintage inscription and signature (all legible but parts faded) on the barrel reads "To my friend Lee, best of luck, Ernie Banks Chicago Cubs 1960" in vintage black pen. Originally presented to Sports Illustrated photographer Lee Balterman, the bat is being consigned his by his nephew and comes with his letter of provenance, photo of Balterman in the dugout with Banks and Billy Williams, Balterman obituary mentioning Banks, and a 1960 Ernie Banks Topps baseball card.
