Description
1958 Ernie Banks All-Star Game Used Bat. The Chicago Cubs Hall of Famer found himself in the starting shortstop position for this Baltimore Memorial Stadium edition of the Midsummer Classic, an event for which he was issued this wonderful signature model Hillerich & Bradsby S2. The occasion is proudly announced upon the barrel, where "All Star Game, Baltimore 1958" sandwiches the facsimile signature. The bat was presented personally by Banks to our consignor, as a vintage black marker notation (8/10) on mid-barrel attests: "To Gary, Best Regards, Ernie Banks, Chi. Cubs, 1964." Autograph has since been traced over. Use is very heavy, but bat expert John Taube asserts that this use, and the subsequent taped handle crack, appear to have been the result of "sandlot" games. He stresses that this post-Banks use in no way diminishes the authenticity of the bat as a Banks All-Star model, however. Length and weight of thirty-five inches and thirty-one ounces are correct for Banks' preferences. An important artifact from Banks' first of two consecutive National League MVP seasons.
