Description
1955 Whitey Ford World Series Game Used & Signed Bat, PSA/DNA GU 10. His 236 victories for the New York Yankees is a franchise record that stands to this day, but his "W" in each of his two World Series starts in 1955 wouldn't be enough to prolong the Brooklyn Dodgers' lengthy history of October heartbreak. But today, with more than six decades of time to heal, we Yankees fans can tip our caps to our noble adversaries for that unforgettable Fall Classic and see this special lumber as a memento of a glorious era in baseball history rather than as a reminder of what could have been.As every bat collector worth his salt is well aware, pitcher lumber is the most elusive of prey, and those wielded by Hall of Fame hurlers in Fall Classic action are all but non-existent. Ford was not entirely hopeless on the other side of the sixty feet and six inches, a career .173 hitter with three home runs, but he'd come up empty this October in six plate appearances after walking and subsequently scoring in his first trip to the plate in Game One.
He'd only fan out once, however, so the light scattering of ball marks and stitch impressions were legitimately earned in battle. Blue paint streaks likewise match Big Apple bat racks. The Hillerich & Bradsby U1 knobless format will be familiar to Clemente fans, and Ford likewise went big with his bats, at thirty-five inches (35") and nearly thirty-eight ounces (37.7 oz.). Handle is uncracked.
Beyond its perfect fidelity to a factory order made on September 22, 1955, Ford confirms validity with a 10/10 black sharpie inscription on the barrel which reads, "My game bat used by me in the 1955 W.S., 1955 World Series Game 1 and 6, Whitey Ford." If there's a better Ford bat out there, we haven't seen it. LOA from PSA/DNA, GU 10. Full LOA from PSA/DNA (autograph).
