1955 Ted Williams All-Star Game Used Bat, PSA/DNA GU 10. Milwaukee County Stadium welcomed over 45,000 fans on July 12, 1955 to witness the twenty-second playing of the Midsummer Classic, one that would prove to be among the most famous editions due to Stan Musial's twelfth-inning walk-off blast to provide a six-to-five Senior Circuit victory. Though the man who wielded this signature model Hillerich & Bradsby W166 found himself on the losing side of the equation that afternoon, this relic is far and away the most significant to emerge from that memorable Wisconsin contest.Interestingly, the H&B ordering records document only one All-Star bat delivery to Williams, rather than the standard two, which leaves no doubt that this specimen saw action in that game. The solid use evident upon every square inch of this historic lumber likewise strongly suggests that the bat played a starring role in Williams' second-half action with the Boston Red Sox after going one-for-three in Milwaukee as the American League's starting left fielder.
The Splendid Splinter finished the 1955 season with a batting average of .356, sixteen points higher than the recognized American League batting champion Al Kaline, the title denied to Williams because the loss of the first month of the season to a divorce settlement with his wife Doris had denied the Boston slugger the requisite tally of at-bats. He'd also club twenty-eight home runs and drive in eighty-three in just ninety-eight games of action. Those numbers would extrapolate to forty-four homers and 130 RBI's for a full 154-game season, good enough for the 1955 Triple Crown.
Many ball marks and stitch impressions decorate the barrel, and heavy pine tar darkens the uncracked handle. Length and weight of thirty-five inches and thirty-one and a half ounces (31.4 oz.) perfectly match that single Hillerich & Bradsby order. It's unquestionably one of the finest Williams bats in the hobby, well deserving of its perfect PSA/DNA rating. LOA from PSA/DNA, GU 10.
