Campy earns National League MVP in his greatest statistical season!

1953 Roy Campanella All-Star Game Used Bat, PSA/DNA GU 9.5.
Though the sturdy former Negro Leaguer claimed three National League MVP Awards during a five-season span of brilliance, his 1953 campaign is widely considered to be the finest of his Hall of Fame career. One need only consult the numbers to support the claim--his 142 runs batted in were both career and 1953 National League highs. His forty-one long balls and .611 slugging average were likewise personal bests, and behind the plate the star backstop coaxed his pitching staff to 105 victories, the highest tally in franchise history, inclusive of the the modern 162-games-per-season era.

Thus the selection process to determine the National League starter at the catcher's position for the 1953 All-Star Game was a simple one, with Campy playing all nine innings of the Senior Circuit's five-to-one victory at Crosley Field. Campanella went one-for-four, singling off fellow former Negro Leaguer and future Hall of Famer Satchel Paige in the eighth and later scoring on Enos Slaughter's single.

The moderate game use evident on this special Hillerich & Bradsby C186 suggests that Campy continued to use the lumber for some duration after the Midsummer Classic, as was typical at the time. Ball marks coat the back barrel, with hard contact raising the grain slightly. Moderate pine tar appears on the uncracked handle. A drilled hole near the center of the bat suggests removal from a mounted display, but this has been expertly repaired. Length is thirty-five and a half inches (35.5"), weight thirty-four ounces (34.1 oz.). LOA from PSA/DNA, GU 9.5.
