The Mick gets his first Midsummer Classic start

1953 Mickey Mantle All-Star Game Used Bat, PSA/DNA GU 9. Twenty years had passed since the Babe christened the inaugural edition of the All-Star Game with the first long ball of the popular exhibition, and as the name Mickey Mantle was penned into the number four spot of the American League batting order on July 14, 1953, the young Oklahoman could begin to sense his position in that continuum of pinstriped greatness. In an assembly of the game's top talent, the Mick was batting clean-up. Could there be any higher honor for a professional hitter?

Here we present one of the most significant Mantle bats to reach the public auction block, the very bat issued to the budding legend as he earned his first starting role in an All-Star Game. Light game use is typical of these rare "special event" gamers made for Midsummer and Fall Classic use, but two colors of rack streaks assure that Mantle repurposed this particular model for regular season use after Crosley Field contest that saw him go hitless with a walk in three plate appearances.

The signature model Hillerich & Bradsby K55 derives from the personal collection of Washington Senators bat boy and later Minnesota Twins visiting team clubhouse manager Ray Crump, who endeared himself to ballplayers as a gopher and was often rewarded with various articles of equipment in gratitude. His letter of provenance is included.

The special lumber matches factory ordering records at thirty-five inches (35") in length and just over thirty-three ounces (33.2 oz.) in weight. The handle remains uncracked. Mantle would close this 1953 season at twenty-one home runs and ninety-two driven in before earning his third World Championship ring with a victory over the Brooklyn Dodgers in a classic Subway Series. LOA from PSA/DNA, GU 9. Letter of provenance from Washington Senators bat boy Ray Crump.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
