Campy goes to Philly
1952 Roy Campanella All-Star Game Used Bat, PSA/DNA GU 9. For a five-season stretch, there was no greater ballplayer on the planet than Campy, the sturdy foundation upon which the Brooklyn Dodgers built a structure of National League dominance, and winner of no fewer than three MVP Awards between 1951 and 1955. The presented lumber derives from the heart of that brilliant era, the second of five pennant-winning seasons at Ebbets with this Hall of Fame backstop behind the plate. The considerable rarity of Campanella representations likewise shares in establishing this as one of the most desirable gamers of the post-war era.It was issued to the 1969 Hall of Fame inductee for his participation in the National League's come-from-behind victory over the American League at Shibe Park. He'd foul out and walk in his two plate appearances as starting catcher before the skies over Philadelphia opened up and drowned the game after five innings.
The bat exhibits the degree of use one would expect from that abridged service, with a few ball marks on the barrel, and light pine tar at the handle. The special format Hillerich & Bradsby G80 measures thirty-five and a half inches (35.5") in length and just over thirty-three and a half ounces (33.7 oz.) in weight, perfectly matching Campy's preferences. The G80 was the only model the superstar backstop ordered that year.
It's not entirely clear why Campanella lumber is so tremendously scarce relative to his superstar contemporaries, but even many of the hobby's leading bat collectors lack a representation. However, this is a model for the collector unsatisfied with simply checking a box off a list. Our records show that this is just the second Campy All-Star bat to ever take a turn on the hobby's auction block. LOA from PSA/DNA, GU 9.
