1952 Mickey Mantle Game Used Bat, PSA/DNA 7.5. Though this legendary slugger made his pinstriped debut with the 1951 New York Yankees, his inaugural campaign was an uneven affair punctuated by struggles at the plate and in the field, a minor league demotion, and even a flirtation with the idea to quit the game entirely. It was in 1952 that the first bolded text appeared in the Mick's stat line, a .924 OPS that led all American Leaguers and elevated the twenty-year old Oklahoman to a third place showing in MVP voting. Free from the shadow of the great DiMaggio, Mantle embarked upon his quest to become the greatest center fielder in baseball history this year.Presented is an exceedingly rare signature model Hillerich & Bradsby M110 dating to that transformational season, a single-season designation made possible by a study of the placement of the "Powerized" imprint and factory ordering records for Mantle bats of this pedigree. The experts at PSA/DNA characterize game use as "heavy," noting multiple ball marks, stitch impressions and two colors of bat rack streaks. A portion of the back barrel has been replaced with enormous skill, the work effectively invisible through anything but the closest of inspection.
Length of thirty-five inches (35") and weight of thirty-four and a half ounces (34.5 oz.) perfectly match Mantle's preferred specs for this sophomore season, the second of three World Championship campaigns to launch his storied career. It is unquestionably one of the most significant Mantle gamers to tempt the advanced collector in recent years. LOA from PSA/DNA, GU 7.5.
