1951 Joe DiMaggio All-Star Game Used Bat, PSA/DNA GU 10. With no center fielder in the American League able to match the supreme talents of Joe DiMaggio, only Uncle Sam was able to keep the legendary Yankee from the sport's most celebrated exhibition between his first season and his last. But in that final 1951 campaign, the aging legend was hobbled by a heel injury and left to watch his brother Dom patrol the outfield grass at Detroit's Briggs Stadium in representation of the Junior Circuit's best. Both Joltin' Joe and his newly-delivered lumber would have to fight another day.And fight they did, as the experts at PSA/DNA confirm. Though it has always been common practice for All-Stars to carry over their specially-produced gamers into the second half of the regular season, the unique evidence found in the grain of this signature model Hillerich & Bradsby D29L leaves no doubt that DiMaggio took this bat to the plate in the closing months of his Hall of Fame career.
The game use is characterized as "outstanding" by those experts, who point to a concentration of ball marks and deep stitch impressions on the left barrel--correct for DiMaggio's label-up right-handed swing--and several blue rack streaks that confirm multiple plate appearances. Length of thirty-six inches (36") and weight of thirty-four and a half ounces (34.3 oz.) perfectly match factory ordering records.
A brief paragraph in the PSA/DNA letter of examination notes that the bat was gifted to a Major League player by DiMaggio himself, and then passed on to the gentleman who first sold the bat at auction. It is likely this man coated the bat with a thin layer of urethane to preserve the finish.
Special event bats--All-Star and World Series models--have always been highly sought after by collectors both for their unique aesthetics and intense rarity. Certainly those once wielded by a Hall of Famer occupy the top echelon of this narrow population. But this particular example, a closing bookend to one of the most celebrated careers in American sports history, is in a class of its own, a relic of which only the finest of private collections are worthy.
