    Description

1951-57 Ted Williams Game Used Bat. Fellow Boston Red Sox Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski once noted, "They can talk about Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb and Rogers Hornsby and Lou Gehrig and Joe DiMaggio and Stan Musial and all the rest, but I'm sure not one of them could hold cards and spades to Williams in his sheer knowledge of hitting. He studied hitting the way a broker studies the stock market and could spot at a glance mistakes that others couldn't see in a week." The Splendid Splinter's childhood wish that he would one day be called the greatest hitter that ever lived did indeed come to fruition, a fact which makes any lumber once blessed by his world class hands a genuine treasure of our National Pastime.

The presented signature model Hillerich & Bradsby W166 was Williams' preferred model throughout the first half of the 1950's, the "W" in the model tag referring to his own last name. The length is an even thirty-five inches. The current weight is just under thirty-five ounces, though it's likely it weighed slighly less in Williams' hands as he was known to bake his bats daily in the clubhouse clothes dryer to increase the spring of the ball off the barrel. Ball marks coat the right barrel, with the abuse causing some separation of the wood grain, each typical traits for Williams' left-handed power. Cleat marks pepper the wood as well, and a faded vintage number "9" is barely discernible upon the knob.

The fiercest competitor in Major League Baseball since the retirement of Ty Cobb, Ted Williams is one of the very few figures in the game who would be worthy of a mention in the same breath. With a perfect score of five for adherence to ordering records, and a perfect three for use, the presented bat earns a rating of PSA/DNA GU 8, the highest possible for a bat without first or second hand provenance. A sporting artifact worthy of Cooperstown and the finest of private collections. LOA from PSA/DNA.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
