1950 Phil Rizzuto Game Used Bat, PSA/DNA GU 8--MVP & World Championship Season! The diminutive 1950 American League MVP almost never got his shot to play Major League baseball, Brooklyn Dodgers manager Casey Stengel taking one look at Scooter's five-foot six-inch frame when he showed up at Ebbets Field for a late 1930's tryout and advising him to trade in his glove for a shoeshine box. But they'd meet again in pinstripes a decade later, the Ol' Perfesser quite pleased to have been proven wrong by the scrappy shortstop, an instrumental figure in seven World Championship campaigns for the Yankees.

Despite Scooter's thirteen seasons of service to Major League Baseball, his game used lumber remains perplexingly rare, with most experts estimating the full surviving population in the single digits. Certainly the offered model rates either at or near the top of that paltry supply, affixed with near certainty to his glorious MVP season of 1950. Rizzuto's .324 batting average during this World Championship season for his New York Yankees is a full fifty points higher than his career average, the agile shortstop better known for his slick fielding than dazzling numbers at the plate. The signature model Hillerich & Bradsby H117 measures thirty-six inches (36") in length and tips the scales at just under thirty-three ounces (32.8 oz.).

Rizzuto ordered thirty-six inch H117 models in 1950 and 1952, and the experts at PSA/DNA lean heavily toward the earlier order due to the difference in the weights requested. The earlier orders called for thirty-four ounces (34 oz.), the latter thirty-two ounces (32 oz.). As every bat collector knows, game used bats shed water weight as they age, so a theoretical 1952 model would have had to miss the mark by a wide margin to weigh nearly thirty-three ounces (33 oz.) today. By contrast, a 1950 order perfectly fits the bill.

Game use is characterized in the PSA/DNA assessment as "excellent," noting ball marks, stitch impressions and professional repair of grain separation at back barrel. Light pine tar remains on the uncracked handle. LOA from PSA/DNA, GU 8.
