    Brooklyn makes history once again...

1949 Roy Campanella All-Star Game Used Bat, PSA/DNA GU 8.5. Ebbets Field would further establish itself as ground zero for the cause of racial equality in baseball two years after Jackie Robinson's debut, hosting the first Midsummer Classic to feature African-American players. Three of the black race's most talented and celebrated baseball representatives would enjoy home field advantage this day, as Roy Campanella joined fellow Dodgers Robinson and Don Newcombe on the roster of National Leaguers, facing Larry Doby of the Cleveland Indians on the Junior Circuit side. Seventy years later, this contest is still counted as one of the most significant editions of the sport's premier exhibition.

Campy would reach base once on an intentional walk in three plate appearances after relieving Andy Seminick behind the plate in the fourth, and the light game use is consistent with that term of service. The Hillerich & Bradsby G80 reveals a scattering of ball marks on the barrel, where some flaking of the finish has been stabilized. Two mounting holes on the uncracked handle have been restored as well, these inconsequential alterations accounting for the lost points from an otherwise perfect rating. Length is thirty-five inches (35"), weight thirty-four ounces (33.9 oz.).

"Event" bats--those issued for All-Star and World Series play--have long commanded a hefty premium due to their rarity and unique appeal, but this special example linking an iconic Hall of Famer to both his hometown and the first racially-integrated All-Star Game stands tall even within that elite breed. This is an impressive centerpiece for collectors of Bums and bats alike. LOA from PSA/DNA, GU 8.5.
