1948 Ted Williams Game Used Bat, Signed by the Boston Red Sox Team. In the accounting of relics borne of our National Pastime, few could evoke a greater response than the Ted Williams game used bat, the tool utilized by a skinny kid from San Diego to realize his dream of becoming the greatest hitter that ever lived. Here we present just such a treasure, supplying the most desirable provenance imaginable in the form of autographs of the man himself, and the team that enjoyed the benefits of his Hall of Fame brilliance.

Bat expert John Taube has matched the Hillerich & Bradsby W153 to a 1948 order, the only year that The Kid requested this particular model. The thirty-five inch length and thirty-three ounce weight match the listed specs. Light use is evident, with a few ball marks on the barrel and a (faintly) underlined number "9" markered on the handle, a perfect match to known exemplars.

But, of course, the presence of vintage black fountain pen autographs from Williams and close to thirty of his Fenway teammates leaves no doubt of its ownership, the iconic slugger joined by the likes of Doerr, Pesky, Earle Combs, Dom DiMaggio and Joe McCarthy (secretarial). The bat was clear-coated soon after the signing, and the process has served its intended purpose admirably, though it has discolored in places from heat exposure. This issue is confined mainly to the unsigned handle area thankfully, leaving the autographs unaffected. A truly splendid splinter from a season that saw Williams lead all American Leaguers with a .369 average, forty-four doubles and 126 bases on balls. LOA from PSA/DNA. Full LOA from PSA/DNA (autograph). Full LOA from James Spence Authentication.
