1946 Mel Ott Game Used Bat Signed by Philadelphia Athletics Team. We couldn't hazard a guess as to why the lowly Mack Men chose an Ott gamer as the medium for their autographs, though perhaps they hoped that some of the slugger's batting brilliance might rub off on them in so doing. If this was the goal, however, it was not a success, as the ballclub would finish the season yet again in the American League's basement, fifty-five games off the pennant pace. Of course it is not the signatures that makes this piece special (though we must note that Hall of Famers Mack (secretarial), Simmons and Kell are among them), but instead the former ownership by the hero of the Polo Grounds who would club the 511th and final homer of his career the season this bat saw action.

And it seems to have seen a bunch of it. Bat expert John Taube characterizes the use as "outstanding," noting plentiful ball and stitch marks, swollen grain and an eleven-inch handle crack expertly repaired with three vintage nails. The handle is scored, a key Ott trait that furthers our ability to place the lumber into Mel's talented hands. The signature model Hillerich & Bradsby likewise matches Ott ordering records at thirty-five inches and thirty-four and a half ounces. A thin coating of varnish over the signatures is noted for the sake of full disclosure, as are the mounting holes drilled at each end, though none of these issues causes any noteworthy ill effects to the display value. A bat that is feverishly hunted by both Hall of Fame and 500 Home Run club specialists alike, rarely seen offered at public auction. Graded GU 7. LOA from PSA/DNA. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication (autographs).
