Description

1946-48 Bill Dickey Game Used Bat, PSA/DNA GU 7. It's not clear why the collecting hobby suffers such a shortage of lumber from this stalwart Yankees catcher, a man who served nineteen seasons as a player, and twelve more in a coaching role. Few men in history have worn the pinstripes longer, and yet the offerings of Dickey bats at auction in the last decade and a half could be counted on one hand. The scarcity has served as a thorn in the side of Yankee and Hall of Fame hobbyists alike, leaving nagging gaps in even the most comprehensive collections.

One Heritage client will see his long struggle come to an end on Platinum Night with a high bid on the presented rarity, a signature model Hillerich & Bradsby C119 in the Earle Combs format favored by Dickey from 1929 through the end of his Hall of Fame playing career. The three-year labeling period of this particular example includes both Dickey's final Yankees season (1946) and his last as a player in any capacity (1947) as a forty-year old player/manager for the Little Rock Travelers of the Southern Association.

The thirty-five inch (35") length and weight just short of thirty-three ounces (32.6 oz.) match two orders in 1946 and one in 1947, according to leading bat expert John Taube. He characterizes the game use as "excellent," noting ball marks, stitch impressions and a characteristic ghost of a removed tape ring at lower part of the handle, which has been repaired with four vintage nails. The top of the barrel has been masterfully restored.

Dickey recorded only twelve at-bats in Little Rock subsequent to his Yankees service, a fact that strongly tips probability of attribution northward to the Bronx. This realization leads to the exciting possibility that the offered bat could be the last used in the Majors by this celebrated resident of Monument Park and the Baseball Hall of Fame. LOA from PSA/DNA, GU 7.
