Description
Joltin' Joe repeats as American League batting champion!
1940 Joe DiMaggio Game Used Bat Signed by the New York Yankees
Team, PSA/DNA GU 9.5. This spectacular slab of battle-scarred
ash derives from the beating heart of Joe DiMaggio's prime, with
1940 at the center of three consecutive seasons north of the .350
mark, a figure he never reached prior to 1939 or after 1941. While
the Hall of Fame center fielder was unable to bridge the gap
between his 1939 and 1941 American League MVP Awards (finishing
third in 1940 behind Hank Greenberg and Bob Feller), he did repeat
as the Junior Circuit's batting champion, his .352 average
outpacing Luke Appling and Ted Williams in second and third place
respectively. One suspects that DiMaggio might well have traded
places with Greenberg had the Tigers failed to wrest the pennant
away from the Yankees after four consecutive seasons soaring above
the House that Ruth Built. The experts at PSA/DNA characterize game use as "excellent," noting ball marks on the left barrel--consistent with DiMaggio's right-handed batting stance--and a cracked and professionally repaired handle. While this signature model Hillerich & Bradsby D29 is consistent with four seasons of orders for the pinstriped legend, the black fountain pen ink signatures of twenty-five Yankees assures the 1940 vintage. Signers include DiMaggio himself, Ruffing, Gordon, Crosetti, Dahlgren, Rolfe, Henrich, Chandler and Keller. Only the signatures of Gomez and Dickey have been deemed secretarial. Strength ranges from 3/10 to 9/10, with most in the upper half of that range. DiMaggio's handwritten autograph beside the facsimile stamped into the barrel is particularly fine.
Length is thirty-six inches (36"), weight thirty-two ounces (32.3 oz.). LOA from PSA/DNA, GU 9.5. Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Full LOA from Beckett Authentication Services.
