Description
1939 Harold "Pee Wee" Reese Game Used Bat, PSA/DNA GU 8. Considered one of the most lopsided trades in Major League history, the future Hall of Fame shortstop was sent to Brooklyn by the Louisville Colonels of the American Association for $35,000 and four players to be named later in a transaction enacted just five days before Reese's twenty-first birthday on July 18, 1939. Reese would prove to be the catalyst for a Brooklyn Dodgers resurgence that would establish the team the leading force of the National League for the two decades to come. Here we present a spectacularly rare signature model Hillerich & Bradsby dating to that historic Baseball Centennial season in which Pee Wee became the first piece in the great Brooklyn Bums puzzle of the 1940's and 1950's.The bat exhibits excellent use, most likely inflicted during Reese's time in Kentucky, as he would not make his official Dodgers debut until April 23, 1940. Slight checking, ball and stitch marks, cleat divots, and red and blue rack streaks decorate the barrel. Vintage nails tack down a handle crack. Early "Hal Reese" facsimile signature appears at barrel of the thirty-four and a half inch lumber, which tips the scales at thirty-two ounces. Perfect black sharpie signature on the barrel is rare "Hal Pee Wee Reese" variation. To the best of our understanding, this is the single earliest Pee Wee Reese bat ever to surface in the collecting hobby, and as such one of the most desirable of all Dodgers models to reach the auction block in recent memory. LOA from PSA/DNA, GU 8. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA (autograph).
