Description

1939 Ernie Lombardi Game Used Bat Signed by National League All-Star Team, PSA/DNA GU 6. Baseball writer Bill James called Lombardi "the slowest man ever to play Major League Baseball," but the Hall of Fame catcher still managed to win a batting title and National League MVP in 1938, the year before this signature model Hillerich & Bradsby saw action. Heavy game use is evident, with ball marks coating the barrel and blue rack streaks on the handle. Length is thirty-five inches (35"), weight thirty-four ounces (34.1 oz.).

Perhaps the most fascinating aspect of this bat is its likely use in the 1939 All-Star Game, the legendary Midsummer Classic that happened exactly a week after Lou Gehrig's "Luckiest Man" speech, on the same hallowed Bronx grounds. The barrel is full of signatures from that Senior Circuit squad, but poor storage of the bat has rendered virtually all of the autographs illegible. Water damage affects the top of the barrel and two chips are missing from the knob. Handle is uncracked. To the left of the center brand, in the dark area, is written "1939 National League All-Stars" in black pen.

Despite the condition issues, this is still a remarkable rarity, just the second Lombardi gamer we have offered in our history, and the only example from any player with a direct connection to the Yankee Stadium All-Star Game during the fabled Centennial season of baseball. LOA from PSA/DNA, GU 6.
