One of the toughest bats of the era

1939-43 Gabby Hartnett Game Used Bat, PSA/DNA GU 8. He struck one of the most famous walk-off long balls in Major League history, a pennant-saving blast in the fading light of a September 28, 1938 meeting with the Pittsburgh Pirates known forever after as "The Homer in the Gloamin'." Though the Chicago Cubs would fail to break its three-decade World Championship drought in the subsequent World Series, that late-career heroism secured Hartnett's status as one of the greatest players ever to call Wrigley home. At the time of his 1955 Hall of Fame induction, Hartnett was widely considered the best catcher in Major League history.

Despite two decades in the Bigs, the supply of game used lumber from the superstar backstop has always trailed demand by a wide margin. Here we present a particularly fine example, a signature model Hillerich & Bradsby with use characterized as "heavy" by the experts at PSA/DNA. They note ball marks and cleat divots in the refinished barrel, and a professionally repaired handle crack, while noting a few depressions on the barrel "can be attributed to general use."

Length of thirty-five inches (35") and weight of thirty-three ounces (33 oz.) match Hartnett's favored specifications for the "Chick Cuccinello model" with a "small knob" that he used exclusively from 1935 through the end of his career.

Just a small handful of Hartnett gamers have appeared on the hobby's major auction block in the past decade, as clear an indication as any of the intense rarity of available representations. It is, in fact, the very first that Heritage has ever had the good fortune to offer, and we expect advanced bat collectors will see this for the unique opportunity it is, and bid accordingly. LOA from PSA/DNA, GU 8.
