Description
Most Likely Used During Gehrig's Historic 1931 Campaign.
1929-31 Lou Gehrig Game Used Bat, PSA/DNA GU 8. While the characteristics of the presented signature model Hillerich & Bradsby suggest a possible manufacturing span of three seasons, leading bat expert John Taube of PSA/DNA leans heavily toward the final year of that range, noting that the dark hickory relic most closely mimics the model called "His 5-13-31" in the Louisville Slugger ordering records. While any lumber from the most noble Yankee of them all is cause for celebration, this example's probable derivation from the 1931 season establishes it as one of the most desirable from Gehrig's narrow supply.Though Connie Mack's simply unstoppable second dynasty once again placed the Yankees in the unfamiliar role of World Series spectator, Gehrig was operating at the height of his powers in 1931, narrowly edged in American League MVP voting by Athletics ace southpaw Lefty Grove, whose thirty-one and four season likewise rates among the finest in Major League history. There was no question, however, that the Iron Horse played the best offense of the season, waging the most serious assault on Hack Wilson's freshly-minted 1930 RBI record of 191 to date. Falling seven short at 184, Gehrig's 1931 tally of runs batted in still stands to this day as both the largest in American League history, and for left-handed batters. His stats for hits (211), runs scored (163), home runs (46) and total bases (410) each led the 1931 American League.
The exceptional use evident in the presented example likewise suggests action during a season of prolific slugging, with ball marks, stitch impressions and cleat marks scattered throughout the barrel. Like its former owner, the bat remains unbroken and ready for action, a fitting tribute to Gehrig's legendary toughness. Dimensions are thirty-four and three quarter inches, and thirty-five ounces. LOA from PSA/DNA, GU 8.
