1929-30 Lewis "Hack" Wilson Game Used Bat, PSA/DNA GU 7. Perhaps the most unusual looking player enshrined at Cooperstown, Wilson carried 195 pounds on his five-foot six frame, balanced on short legs and tiny size six feet. Today doctors recognize these traits as hallmarks of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, indicating that Wilson's struggles with the bottle began even before his own birth. His sad decline would likewise be precipitated by the bottle, but as Wilson gripped the presented signature model Hillerich & Bradsby there was no more dangerous batter in the game. During each of the two possible seasons of this bat's active duty, Wilson led the National League in runs batted in, with his 1930 tally of 191 a record that stands to this day. His two-season total (1929-30) of 350 is likewise untouched in baseball history.Memorabilia of any sort related to this brilliant but troubled slugger is particularly rare, and this is the first Wilson bat we've handled. The heavy use is to be expected considering the outrageous stats posted during the period, and a handle crack and knob chip have been professionally repaired. Dead wood on the barrel, the result of Wilson's lengthy punishment, is tacked down with ancient nails. Cleat marks appear on the barrel, and light pine tar on the handle. The letters "H" and "J" are carved into the knob and barrel end respectively. Length of 35.75 inches and weight of thirty-five ounces match Wilson's ordering records. LOA from PSA/DNA, GU 7.
