1928-30 Jim Bottomley Game Used Bat, PSA/DNA GU 9. Aside from his single game record of twelve RBIs and his 1928 N.L. MVP season, Sunny Jim's had a quirky and likeable demeanor which set him apart and is wonderfully captured in this touching New York Times obituary from 1959:

"He wore his baseball cap at a jaunty angle and his mannerisms on the playing field made him a Ladies' Day favorite. But he was equally the favorite of the male fans for his slugging prowess."

In between his two World Series championship seasons with the Cardinals, first in 1926 when he led the league with 120 RBI and then in 1931 when he hit .348, Bottomley used the bat on offer here during a period of sustained offensive excellence when he averaged thirty-five doubles, thirteen triples, twenty-five home runs, and 123 RBI, while batting .315.

Heavy use is evidenced on Sunny Jim's pre-model number H&B lumber, which measures 34 7/8" long and weighs 35.9 ounces. The tell-tale signs of game use include hit and cleat marks on the barrel, light pine tar residue on the cracked handle, and a single-ring remnant of where tape was removed about the knob. The inscription "1930", which appears in vintage black fountain pen, was penned in an unknown hand and there is evidence of additional signatures and writing that is illegible. Nonetheless, these are minor issues which hardly detract from the overall importance and display appeal of this tremendous and rare exemplar which was used by a Hall of Famer at the peak of his powers. LOA from PSA/DNA, GU 9. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
