    Description

    The earliest known Ott gamer!

1927 Mel Ott Game Used Sidewritten Rookie Bat, PSA/DNA GU 10.
The first National League to gain entry to the illustrious 500 Home Run Club had just a single round-tripper to his name when this exceedingly rare and important relic left the Louisville factory en route to the Polo Grounds. Only a week before that August 12, 1927 shipment date, Ott had inked his first professional bat deal with Hillerich & Bradsby, supplying the autograph that was utilized for the barrel branding of this pre-model beauty. It stands alone as the earliest Ott bat known to exist.

Just seventeen years old and five-foot seven, 150 pounds when he came to the notice of Giants manager John McGraw, the New Orleans native would quickly defy expectations in becoming the Big Apple ballclub's leading offensive threat for a span of nearly two decades. From 1928 through 1945, Ott led all Giants in home runs, a record for consecutive seasons of team leadership in any Triple Crown category. This is the only gamer known to precede that streak.

The bat exhibits outstanding game use, with four vintage nails tacking down slight checking on the barrel, and ball marks and stitch impressions throughout. Handle crack has been professionally repaired. Remnants of a shipping label appear on the front and back barrel, while right barrel has been planed to accept factory sidewriting that has faded to near invisibility but which reveals "Mel Ott" under a video spectral comparator.

Caliper readings allow the experts at PSA/DNA to determine the elite early vintage of this important rarity, which measures thirty-five inches (35") in length and almost thirty-six ounces (35.6 oz.) in weight. As the earliest known Ott gamer, with both spectacular game use and factory sidewriting, this is a bat that stands as the finest to emerge from Master Melvin's Hall of Fame arsenal. LOA from PSA/DNA, GU 10.
