1925-28 Zack Wheat Game Used & Sidewritten Bat, PSA/DNA GU
7. After getting his professional start in 1907 just up the
road from the Heritage Auction world headquarters with the Fort
Worth Panthers of the Texas League, Zack Wheat would go on to
become the most faithful employee in Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers
franchise history, his 2,322 games wearing their uniform outpacing
runners-up Bill Russell, Pee Wee Reese and Gil Hodges. He's
likewise the franchise leader in hits, doubles, triples, RBI's and
total bases, all while leading the National League multiple times
in put-outs and fielding percentage. He'd be welcomed into
Cooperstown immortality in 1959.While it's entirely possible that the offered Hillerich & Bradsby signature model lumber saw action during Wheat's last days at Ebbets, it was returned to the Louisville factory for duplication on July 9, 1927 according to faded grease pencil on the barrel, less than three months before he'd retire from the Majors as part of Connie Mack's 1927 assembly of faded legends including Ty Cobb and Eddie Collins. Wheat would play a final season of professional ball in 1928 with the Double-A Minneapolis Millers before hanging up the spikes for good.
