1925-27 Wally Pipp Game Used Sidewritten Bat, PSA/DNA GU 7. Despite an entirely respectable Major League career served predominantly in pinstripes--did you know that Pipp still holds the team record for sacrifices at 226?--the first baseman of the inaugural Yankees World Championship team of 1923 is remembered in baseball history for a single, seemingly innocuous moment. On June 2, 1925, Pipp arrived at Yankee Stadium with a terrible headache. Manager Miller Huggins overheard Pipp asking the team trainer for a couple aspirin and patted him on the shoulder. "Wally, take the day off," he advised. We'll try that kid Gehrig at first today and get you back in there tomorrow."As we all know, that date marked the first of 2,130 consecutive games that the Iron Horse would serve as the team's leading first sacker, transforming the story of Pipp into a mere footnote for Gehrig's epic tale of bravery and achievement. Pipp would find a new home in Cincinnati for the 1926 season, concluding his fifteen season career there in 1928.
The offered signature model Hillerich & Bradsby was heavily used by the unlucky star before being shipped back to the factory for duplication in the weeks following his old team's greatest season. Ball marks, cleat divots and a handle crack speak to a long term of service, and vintage grease pencil on the knob provides a "11-28-27" date. Length is just short of thirty-five inches (34.875"), weight just short of thirty-five ounces (34.7 oz.). LOA from PSA/DNA, GU 7.
