    Description

1923 Sam Rice Game Used Sidewritten Bat, PSA/DNA GU 9. As the game transitioned from Dead Ball to Live, this 1963 Hall of Fame inductee remained true to the old ways, earning a well-deserved reputation as one of the sport's premier slap hitters, and one of its toughest outs. He'd retire on strikes just 275 times in over 9.000 at bats while walking over 700 times, and though he'd record only thirty-four home runs in two decades of Big League service, he consistently found himself in the American League's top ten rankings for runs scored.

Validated Rice gamers traded in the hobby could be counted on a single hand, and this is undeniably the finest of that endangered breed, a sidewritten beauty from the outfielder's gilded prime. The signature model Hillerich & Bradsby exhibits outstanding game use with a dense collection of ball marks on the barrel and some blackening consistent with other bats partially exposed to the 1930 first at the Louisville Slugger factory. Light coating of gripping coating appears on the cracked handle, which has been lightly planed like the barrel for the application of grease pencil writing. At the handle, we find fascinating text reading, "Be Sure to Make Knob Little Larger"--the only notation of this type we've ever encountered on a sidewritten bat--while barrel holds the more standard text, "Sam Rice, 7-24-23 Washington."

Length of just under thirty-five inches (34.75") and weight of thirty-four ounces (34.1 oz.) are both consistent with factory ordering records, and this particular bat is the genetic forebear for many Rice gamers to come, including those wielded in the Senators' first World Championship season the following year. In every regard, from rarity to format to vintage, this is a Cooperstown-quality artifact. LOA from PSA/DNA, GU 9. LOA from MEARS, A9.
