Description

1912-15 Ray Schalk Rookie-Era Game Used Bat, PSA/DNA GU 8. Tipping the scales at forty-four ounces, this mammoth slab of Spalding ash instantly evokes the Dead Ball Era with its thunderous bulk and minimal tapering that allowed lumber like this to last virtually forever without cracking. And clearly the young White Sox catcher did a great deal of work with this enormously rare and desirable relic, with use described by bat expert John Taube as "heavy." Ball marks coat the barrel, with cleat marks on the handle, tobacco juice stains and a chipped knob. The Spalding logo appears on the knob end, but Taube stresses that the block lettered "Ray Schalk" on the barrel assures professional issue, with the more common "Autograph Series" bats from this manufacturer quite different and first appearing a decade later.

It has been over ten years since a Schalk gamer made an appearance on the hobby's auction block, so one could reasonably expect the wait for the next to be a long one, if not interminable. This hefty thirty-four and a half inch relic allows one advanced collector to fill a hole that appears in virtually every other hobbyist's catalog. One of the most exciting bat offerings of 2012, without question. LOA from PSA/DNA, GU 8.
