    Description

1885-90 John Morrill Game Used Bat, PSA/DNA Authentic. For collectors of nineteenth century lumber, it's a waiting game. In nearly fifteen years of sports collectibles auctions, Heritage has sold just one prior to this model, a Cap Anson model which commanded $286,800 nearly a decade ago. While there's no question that Anson's significance as the first member of the 3,000 Hit Club was responsible for that eye-popping result, "Honest John" Morrill was a big name in the earliest days of Major League Baseball, debuting with the Boston Red Stockings on April 24, 1876. Morrill would spend nearly the entirety of his career with this team founded by Harry Wright, playing together with such early legends as George Wright, Tim Murnane, Jim O'Rourke and King Kelly.

The stocky lumber is just under thirty-three inches in length (32.875") and forty-two ounces (41.8 oz.) in weight, thick-handled and coated with ball marks, stitch impressions and cleat divots. "Wright & Ditson, Boston, Makers" text is applied to center brand area, while "Morrill" is burnt into the grain directly opposite. An extraordinary early step in the evolution of the sport's offensive weapon. LOA from PSA/DNA, Authentic.
