    Description

1870's Harford's Nine Prize Club Trophy Bat & "Pill Box" Cap. Ancient pairing is believed to derive from Harford County, the home of Baltimore, Maryland, which would decades later establish itself as one of the game's most hallowed grounds for spawning the great Babe Ruth. The thirty-six inch long bat is believed to date to the 1876 American Centennial due to the remnants of colorful ribbons at center of bat and each end. Golden block lettering spirals the length of the barrel, reading, "Harford's Nine Prize Club," and the handle is artfully grooved as a piece of fine furniture might be. This is clearly a bat for which no expense nor effort was spared. It was found with the offered cap, a felt pillbox style with a brass letter "H" over the visor which led us to the rather obvious conclusion that the cap belonged to a member of the Harford Nine. The cap is satin-lined, with the manfacturer's logo in the crown, though illegible due to age and use. A remarkable find for the advanced early baseball collector, and an exciting project for the researcher/historian. Guide Value or Estimate: $4,000 - $6,000.
