Early 2000's Fidel Castro Double-Signed Baseball with Photographic Evidence. There's a long-standing myth that Castro was once granted a Major League try-out, and that the island nation of Cuba might have traveled a far different path had he made the cut, but in point of fact the communist dictator made it no further than intramural competition for the University of Havana before overthrowing the government of Fulgencio Batista in 1959. Certainly his affection for the American national pastime is authentic, however, and the tiny country continues to produce baseball talent disproportionate to its population. Perhaps no nation on earth is more single-mindedly dedicated to the sport.

As such, Castro has long been prized among single signed baseball collectors, and the Cuban leader's decision in the early years of the new millennium to cease signing that medium has made offerings ever rarer. Often those that do arise are of questionable legitimacy, a trend that the offered specimen bucks in a most unique way. Our consignor has asked for anonymity, but has supplied photography from an exciting visit to Cuba with former President Jimmy Carter, who is pictured overseeing the deceased dictator's signing of three OML (Selig) baseballs. According to our consignor, Castro was disappointed with his first signing attempt on the listed example, flipping it to sign again. Both signatures are very bold but exhibit scattered fingerprints from Castro as he handled the ink before it had fully dried. Fidel's fingerprints on this mint condition ball, along with two distinct signatures, make this a one-of-a-kind collector's piece. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
