Description

Circa 1970 Bill Veeck & Satchel Paige Signed Baseball. A neat duo here, pairing two of the most iconoclastic figures in baseball history. While Veeck dates his personalized inscription "7/7/48," we believe the ball was manufactured and signed years later, and that this specific notation was applied because it was the date that Veeck signed the legendary Negro League pitcher to his Cleveland Indians roster. Veeck's black felt tip writing is unimprovably bold, as is Paige's blue ballpoint offering on the opposing side panel. The "Official League" ball remains bright and white, with no flaws of note. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.

This lot derives from the collection of the late Reverend G. Richard McKelvey, a true pioneer of the baseball autograph collecting hobby. For nearly eight decades, Reverend McKelvey actively compiled his collection of in-person autographs, and is widely recognized as the innovator of "theme balls," paving the way for the wildly popular 500 Home Run Club and 300 Win Club baseballs of today. Many other noteworthy pieces from his collection are currently up for bidding in our Sunday Internet Sports Auctions.
