Description

Circa 1960 Carl Mays Single Signed Baseball. Carl Mays is etched in baseball's long history for one moment which changed the game of baseball forever. The sport had a longstanding practice of keeping baseballs in play until they were nearly unrecognizable. A submariner, Mays unleashed a pitch which ended the life of popular Indians infielder Ray Chapman by striking him directly in the temple in 1920. Chapman did not pick up on the baseball and paid the ultimate price. While Mays was an accomplished pitcher, known for not taking any guff from anyone, the Chapman episode rode him until the end of his life in 1971. Single-signed baseballs of the Yankees hurler have eluded all but a few collections.

We are sure the bidding for this Mays single will reach a feverish level given it is one of only a few in the auction archives. Mays carefully scripted his name in blue ink (9/10). "To George" is written on the north panel. Some age wear is shown on the ONL (Giles) horsehide, but the Mays signature is the boldest we have encountered. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication.
