Description

Circa 1870 "Figure Eight" Model Baseball. Spectacular ancient baseball artifact represents the earliest and finest example we've seen of this first evolutionary step away from the "lemon peel" style that dominated the game of baseball until this point. The ball is skillfully constructed, perfectly spherical and well-balanced, and wonderfully preserved with every last stitch solidly in place. The importance of this piece is difficult to overstate--after all, such innovations as the curve ball and split-fingered fastball would never have become part of the game's lexicon. The ball measures approximately seven inches in circumference (modern balls are nine inches around), a size that likewise dominated the game at the time. A very special piece, as any serious baseball historian will realize.
