Description

2008 Gary Sheffield 496th Career Home Run, 250,000th in Major League History. Were you a little surprised that such records have actually been kept since the birth of Major League Baseball in 1869? So were we. But we trust Bud Selig's bean counters, and we recall quite well when this story hit ESPN Sportscenter back in September of last year. Probable future Hall of Famer Gary Sheffield's 496th career homer, a grand slam no less, was the lucky quarter-millionth.

The Official Major League baseball that set the mark looks like any other, of course, but the accompanying provenance is as ironclad as one could hope for. Delivered to us from consignor Nikki Gianino, who caught the ball on the fly on her twenty-seventh birthday, is the following:

1) Game ticket for the September 8, 2008 Detroit Tigers home game.
2) A 9/11/08 copy of the Detroit area newspaper The Monroe Evening News sports section featuring an article entitled, "Monroe woman catches historic homer." Ms. Gianino is interviewed, and is pictured holding the baseball.
3) A VHS recording of the home run, clearly showing Ms. Gianino catching the ball.
4) A pair of certificates from the ballclub which read, "The Detroit Tigers Congratulate Nikki Gianino For an Amazing Catch On September 8, 2008," and "The Detroit Tigers Wish Nikki Gianino A Very Happy Birthday on September 8, 2008."

As the pace of home runs has sped up considerable since the days of the 1869 Cincinnati Red Stockings, it's likely we won't have to wait another 139 years until we hit the half million mark, but if we aren't all dead and buried when that day comes, we won't be far off. Better to chase this one instead.
