2001 Barry Bonds Sixtieth Home Run Baseball. "Sixty, count 'em, sixty! Let's see some son-of-a-bitch match that!" Babe Ruth, who famously uttered those words following his own record drive in 1927, was surely watching from above when the controversial Bonds did just that, smacking this OML orb onto the walkway of Pacific Bell Park, just ten feet short of McCovey Cove on September 6, 2001. With that swing, Bonds became just the fifth man to reach that lofty plateau, joining the Babe, Maris, McGwire and Sosa in an elite brotherhood. While one must admit that Bonds' star has dimmed somewhat since his record-smashing seventy-three home run season of 2001, there is still every reason to be fascinating by this milestone ball, and its historical connection to the great Bambino makes it particularly special. The ball was originally sold as Lot 15 in Mastro Auctions' March 2002 sale, with a notarized letter from the fan who caught the ball. Unfortunately, our consignor has misplaced that letter, but we attest that this is that ball, and the minor imperfections in the ball's stamping can be matched to the Mastro catalog photo. We also still do have the bleacher ticket used by the fan that day, and it will be included in the lot. After purchasing the ball, our consignor had it personalized and signed by Bonds, all ink rating 10/10. Authenticating sticker from Barry Bonds. The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
