The team was led by ace pitcher Pedro MartÃnez, who had one of the most dominant seasons in MLB history, winning the AL Cy Young Award with a 23-4 record, a 2.07 ERA, and 313 strikeouts. Offensively, Nomar Garciaparra anchored the lineup, batting .357 and earning a Silver Slugger. The Red Sox defeated the Cleveland Indians in a thrilling AL Division Series but fell to the New York Yankees in the ALCS.
