    Description

1987 Cuban President Fidel Castro Single Signed Baseball, PSA/DNA NM-MT 8.

UPDATE: This baseball has been professionally graded by PSA/DNA since the publication of the printed catalog. The autograph, the ball itself and the final grade are all 8/10.

There's a long-standing myth that Castro was once granted a Major League try-out, and that the island nation of Cuba might have traveled a far different path had he made the cut, but in point of fact the communist dictator made it no further than intramural competition for the University of Havana before overthrowing the government of Fulgencio Batista in 1959. Certainly his affection for the American national pastime is authentic, however, and the tiny country continues to produce baseball talent disproportionate to its population. Perhaps no nation on earth is more single-mindedly dedicated to the sport.

As such, Castro has long been prized among single signed baseball collectors, and the Cuban leader's decision over a decade ago to cease signing that medium has made offerings ever rarer. Often those that do arise are of questionable legitimacy, a trend that the offered specimen bucks in a most unique way. A notarized letter of provenance from our consignor, a reported for the Dallas Morning News, tells the tale of his visit to Cuba's presidential palace in 1987 to tour the various facilities of the approaching Pan Am Games in Havana.

The tour group was given baseballs as they were escorted through a Cuban sports equipment factory and later, when several members were granted an audience with the Cuban president, these baseballs were pressed into service as autographed souvenirs.

The lightly-toned but otherwise pristine single signed sphere is accompanied by the aforementioned letter of provenance, a copy of a photograph of our consignor and Castro together, and a copy of our consignor's article as it ran in the Dallas Morning News. Between the quality of the piece itself and the ironclad provenance, this is arguably the finest Castro single to emerge in recent memory. Letter of provenance from consignor. Full Grading LOA from PSA/DNA, NM-MT 8.
