    Description

One of the most controversial homers ever!

1983 George Brett Pine Tar Game Home Run Baseball Signed by Brett & Goose Gossage.

UPDATE: We have located the fan's letter of provenance for this ball and will update the online listing to picture it.

The perfect accessory to the powder blue gamer in the previous lot, the offered OAL (MacPhail) baseball is the very one that George Brett launched from the sticky surface of his Louisville Slugger into the Yankee Stadium outfield bleachers and a boiling cauldron of controversy. As one fan in the cheap seats worked through the mixed emotions of catching a home run ball and watching the home team lose the lead just an out away from the victory, the Royals' Hall of Fame third basement was charging the home plate umpire with the murderous intent of a Pamplona bull.

We aren't sure exactly how, but the fan who caught the ball was tracked down and he sold the ball to renowned collector Barry Halper, who had briefly owned the notorious bat before Brett bought it back and donated it to the Hall of Fame. Refer to Lot 2070 in the Halper auction catalog and you'll find this text about the ball:

"The first is the actual home run ball hit for the disallowed home run in the pine tar game; it has been signed by Brett in blue ink, 'Barry, you deserve this - Thank you, George Brett' (8/10); and by Goose Gossage in black ink, 'Barry, I threw the F---ing thing! Goose Gossage' (7/10). A letter from the fan who caught the ball accompanies it."

The ball is exactly as described, toned with age and rubbing mud, the three stars under the "Haiti" stamping confirming 1983 vintage. Included with the ball is a stub for the contest, autographed in 9/10 blue sharpie by Brett. Full LOA from PSA/DNA for both the ball and the ticket. Letter of provenance from fan who caught home run ball.
