1979 Thurman Munson Single Signed Baseball Signed The Day He Died with Provenance. The fearless leader of the Yankee World Championship squads of the disco era, Captain Munson's tragic death as a result of an airplane accident has left just a shallow supply of quality autographs for the legions of collectors desiring one. This is particularly true of single signed baseballs. The story behind this particular single adds an entirely different level of intrigue though.

According to notarized letter, this is almost surely the final autograph Munson signed during his life. It was signed shortly before he left to the Canton airport where he would perish in an airplane crash. The notarized typed letter states: "I worked with Thurman Munson in 1979 at United Reality in North Canton, Ohio where he owned real estate property. Plus he was a personal friend of mine from the time he was a student at Kent State. On August 2, 1979, Thurman was at United Reality talking with the owners. My co-worker, Marcia Zerby and I were on break at 3:00 p.m. when Thurman started to leave. He told us he was going to the Akron Canton airport to practice takeoffs and landings in his airplane. The airport was just a few miles from United Reality. I said Thurman you never gave me an autographed baseball for my son. He went to his car signed the ball and tossed it to me and left for the airport. As far as I know this is the last baseball he ever autographed on August 2, 1979."

The blue ink signature rates 9/10, and there is a black mark on the first letter of the last name. Light age wear evident. This catalog listing represents one of the most unique offerings in this Platinum Night sale. Full LOA from James Spence Authentication. Notarized letter from original owner. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
