1978 Pete Rose Signed & Inscribed 2,999th Hit Baseball. The one just before 3,000.

For almost twelve decades, since Adrian "Cap" Anson first planted the flag, summiting the 3,000 plateau has been as strong a guarantee of baseball immortality as any in the sport, with only a handful of men in Major League history ever taking in the view from that lofty perch. Was it an omen that Rose would be member number thirteen?

Presented is the Official National League (Feeney) ball struck by Rose on May 5, 1978 which put him on the brink of the elite brotherhood - an infield chopper off Montreal Expo pitcher Steve Rogers which Pete beat out in typical Charlie Hustle fashion to notch number 2,999. Later, in the fifth inning, Rose would record another single off Rogers for 3,000.

Both balls were instantly retired from action and delivered to the Cincinnati Reds dugout. While Rose took home No. 3,000, Pete gifted No. 2,999 to Cincinnati Reds vice president Dick Wagner. The notated text on the tanned horsehide reads, "To Dick, My Good Wishes, Hit '2,999,' Pete Rose." The ball exhibits clear game use while the inscription and signature (except for light fading on the word "good") grades an overall 9/10.

With the recent thirtieth anniversary of Rose's banishment from baseball, and his eightieth birthday on the horizon, there are few encouraging signs that Rose will live to see Cooperstown's doors swing open for him. Should that day come, this is a piece which will certainly be worthy to reside behind plexiglass within those hallowed grounds. This lot includes the 1993 letter of provenance from the person who purchased the ball from Wagner in 1992. Letter of provenance from Mike Gutierrez. LOA from Heritage Auctions. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
