Description
1972 Nate Colbert's Record Fifth Home Run Baseball from Doubleheader. One May 2, 1954, Stan "The Man" Musial clubbed three home runs in the first game of a doubleheader, and two more in the second, becoming the first Major Leaguer to go deep five times in a single day. In the stands, an eight-year old boy named Nate Colbert told his father he would match that feat one day. His father just chuckled. But eighteen years later, the young Colbert kept his word when on August 1, 1972, he took Atlanta Braves pitching deep five times, driving in thirteen runs to top Musial's standing record of eleven. Presented is the final long ball of Colbert's astonishing day, an ONL (Feeney) sphere exhibiting strong game use and neatly notated "Atlanta 8-1-72, This is the ball that broke the records in Atlanta by Nate Colbert. HR's, total bases, RBI's are National League Records, Aug. 1, 1972, 5 home runs in doubleheader ties Stan Musial." A third panel features other stats, but have faded from easy legibility. Colbert's signature on the fourth panel is quite light but legible. Accompanying the ball is a notarized letter of provenance from the gentleman who purchased the ball from the San Diego Padres' bat boy (1969-74) who retrieved the ball and notated it for posterity. Letter of provenance from original buyer. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA (autograph). Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication (autograph).View all of [The Seth Swirsky Collection ]
