1970 Last Baseball Used at Connie Mack Stadium (Formerly Shibe Park). Born as Shibe Park in 1909 and renamed in 1953 for the manager who presided over the hometown Athletics for the first four decades of its existence, Connie Mack Stadium was already being torn apart by souvenir seekers as Phillies outfielder Oscar Gamble singled this ball to center to bring a dramatic end to competition at the venerable old park with a walk-off Phillies victory. And so the grounds hallowed by the likes of Bender, Baker, Foxx, Grove and visitors from Cobb to Shoeless Joe to the Babe was laid to rest, bookending a history that begun with a pitch thrown by Hall of Fame legend Eddie Plank on Opening Day 1909.

The ONL (Feeney) ball is boldly notated across the sweet spot, "Last ball hit at Connie Mack. Gamble Singled to Center Off Reed." Similarly inked on the opposing side over the ball's stamping are the words "Thurs. Oct. 1, 1970, Phils 2 Expos 1, 10 Innings." Solid game use is clearly evident.

A 1990 letter of provenance is signed by vanquished Expos shortstop Bobby Wine, who was tossed the ball by center fielder Boots Day who had fielded the ball but determined that any attempt to throw out a charging Tim McCarver at the plate would be in vain. What follows is a selection of newspaper clippings detailing the attempts of the winning bidder in that 1990 auction to loan the ball to the Hall of Fame, who would only accept donations. Also included in the accompanying paperwork are two later auction catalog clippings of subsequent sales. And, finally, we have the certificate and program issued to fans in attendance for that final game at the historic ballpark, remembering so many years of brotherly baseball love. Letter of provenance from Bobby Wine. Various newspaper clippings discussing and picturing baseball.
