    Description

1967 American League All-Star Team Signed Baseball from the Rico Petrocelli Collection. Rosters were stretched a little thin during the 1967 All-Star Game which took place at Anaheim Stadium. The teams battled to a stalemate before the Senior Circuit prevailed in the fifteenth inning. It was the longest All-Star Game by innings until it was matched in 2008. This inordinately white OAL (Cronin) baseball was passed around the American League locker room and signed by twenty-seven in ballpoint ink. Autographs average 8/10 to 9/10 and include: Petrocelli, Hunter, Peters, Olivia, Carew (rookie), Horlen, Killebrew, Yastrzemski, Brooks Robinson, Downing, Rigney, Ryan, Mincher, Freehan, Agee, Chance, McGlothlin, Mantle (8/10), Etchebarren, Stanky, Bauer, Alvis, Berry, Lonborg and two more. Letter of provenance from Rico Petrocelli. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.

More Information: The Rico Petrocelli Collection.

At six feet tall and 175 pounds, Rico Petrocelli didn't look like a home run hitter, but his "Fenway Stroke" was remarkably effective at surmounting the legendary Green Monster, and his forty dingers in 1969 stood as record for shortstops until Alex Rodriguez claimed the title in 2002. Petrocelli ranks with the most beloved Red Sox of the post-war era, but he grew up an avid New York Yankees fan and Mickey Mantle in particular. It was Petrocelli himself who closed the book on the Mick's glorious career, catching Mantle's pop-up on September 28, 1968.

But it's the Impossible Dream year of 1967 for which Petrocelli is best remembered today, a season that saw him earn the starting shortstop role for the American League All-Star team and club two home runs in Game Six of the World Series to set up a decisive Game Seven, unfortunately against the 1968 National League Cy Young and MVP Award winner Bob Gibson.

Rico himself is the consignor of this exciting collection of personal mementos from his many years in baseball, as a player, coach and broadcaster. Each lot will be accompanied by a letter of provenance from the two-time All-Star and member of the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame.
