Description

1966 Roberto Clemente Single Signed Baseball. He gave his Pittsburgh fans the pleasure of witnessing his 3,000th career hit before giving his life in a tragic airplane accident during the subsequent off-season while on a humanitarian aid mission to Nicaragua. Like the noble Lou Gehrig before him, baseball waived the standard five-year waiting period for Hall of Fame enshrinement, honoring the fallen twelve-time Gold Glover along with Monte Irvin, George Kelly and Warren Spahn as members of the 1973 induction class.

Clemente's elite significance in the sport, and the tragic and sudden nature of his passing, pull the demand for and supply of his autograph in opposite directions, but even in that thinnest of populations, this particular example distinguishes itself for its enormous quality. Clemente's side panel autograph is strong, 8/10 in our estimate, while the "Official League" ball is likewise in fantastic condition, still housed in its original, undamaged retail box. A black line races across the sweet spot but it does not approach the autograph. Included in the lot is a signed letter from our consignor, who tells the story of acquiring the signature personally in St. Louis as the Pirates visited the hometown Cardinals during fan photo day. "8-27-66" is written on the box, undoubtedly the day Clemente created a masterpiece. Letter of provenance from consignor. Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Full LOA from SGC.
