The earliest "61 in '61" home run baseball ever offered at auction!

1961 Roger Maris 7th Home Run Baseball of Record Season. Take your asterisk and stick it where the sun don't shine. Sure, Maris had eight more games to complete his masterpiece, but we suspect he would have gladly traded them for some portion of the adoration that numbers three and seven enjoyed as they took aim at the single-season home run record. We'd struggle to identify any other instance of a star player, much less a reigning MVP, being booed by his hometown fans as he produced a season for the ages.

So the underdog in us will always consider the 1961 season of Roger Maris as one of the most compelling individual achievements in American sports history, and certainly no relic better celebrates that Babe-busting campaign better than one of the sixty-one horsehide sphere Rajah sent into the cheap seats.

This is just the second we've ever encountered, launched well before whispers of a threat to Ruth's dominion had begun, just over the 344 foot sign at Yankee Stadium during a Baltimore Orioles visit on May 21st. We include in the lot a great photo of right fielder Earl Robinson (was EVERY Oriole named Robinson?!) tumbling over the low wall in his futile attempt to thwart the ball's escape.

Somewhere in that tangle of grasping arms is Louis D'Angelo, whose son provides a notarized letter of provenance detailing his father's lifelong love affair with the Yankees. He confirms that the vintage notation on the side panel of the provided OAL (Cronin) ball is in his father's hand:

    "H.R. #7 Hit By Roger Maris 5/21/61."

The ball is correct for the period and has clearly been rubbed up decades ago for competition. Also included in the lot is the elder D'Angelo's program from that contest, marked with the jersey numbers of the batting order but not scored. Notarized letter of provenance from son of fan who caught home run ball.
