    Description

1960's Mercury Seven Astronauts Signed Baseball with Gus Grissom. This "stellar" sphere features the autographs of four of the famed Mercury Seven astronauts. Most noteworthy is the autograph of the tragic Gus Grissom, whose death in the Apollo I launching pad fire in January 1967 makes his by far the scarcest signature of these pioneering space men. Grissom rates at a solid 8/10, followed by Wally Schirra (7/10), Alan Shepard (6/10) and Scott Carpenter at 9/10. The ONL (Giles) ball is still fairly white with no noticeable toning spots but some small black scuff lines. One panel bears "7-7-63 Astrodome At Houston Astronauts" inscription. It appears that "7-7-63 Houston" is vintage with the rest added a couple of years later. One of just the tiniest handful of baseballs bearing autographs from this most celebrated corps of early rocket riders, with Grissom only being found on a handful of baseballs. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
