Description

A stunning representation from the game's bravest pioneer

1960's Jackie Robinson Single Signed Baseball. While it's no groundbreaking statement to express that prejudice is most fundamentally rooted in ignorance, it's important that we clarify that term. The enormous strides made in American racial equality in the past seven decades are not due to the white majority becoming more intelligent, but rather more familiar with our fellow citizens of African descent. Human nature instructs us to fear, to condemn, that which we do not understand, and the racial divisions in this nation had, since colonial times, been absolute.

We offer this prelude in order to illustrate just how substantial and essential were the contributions of Jackie Robinson. That he forever changed the character of our National Pastime for the better is self-evident, but overly simplistic. Even in the (relative to the vast majority of the United States) racially diverse borough of Brooklyn, Jackie Robinson would be for thousands the first black man that they considered "one of us." They cheered for him. They loved him. Some of the boys in the stands at Ebbets would march as men in Selma because their hearts and minds had been opened during warm summer afternoons in Flatbush. In short, Jackie Robinson was baseball's greatest gift to the soul of our nation, and arguably the most significant figure in the history of American sports.

Presented is a fitting tribute to Robinson's enduring contribution, a stunningly pristine single signed baseball making its hobby debut within the Platinum Night auction. The "Special Official League" sphere remains housed in its original box, the key to its remarkable state of preservation today. While Robinson most commonly personalized the small supply of single signed baseballs that exist today, this representation is serendipitously free of any names but for the signer himself, who adds a "Best wishes" notation before his autograph. A few minor toning dots, barely meriting a mention, appear on adjacent panels of the otherwise snow-white horsehide. It's a baseball for the uncompromising collector. Full LOA from James Spence Authentication.
